The Pros and Cons of Smoking a Ceramic Pipe

Ceramic pipes have technically been around for centuries; it’s one of the earliest smoking pipe types. They’ve enjoyed various levels of popularity throughout the years, coming around in modern times as novelty items. However, ceramic pipes are also quite popular for the every day smoker.

Let’s take a deeper look at the pros and cons of these unique pieces, including their traits and ceramic pipe cleaning.

The Pros

Durability

If you love the look of glass pipes but are afraid they’re too easy to break, ceramic pipes might just be your answer. They’re made from clay rather than glass, which makes them more durable.

Now, that doesn’t mean when you’re done smoking a ceramic pipe you get to drop it like a microphone and strut out of your living room. It just means if you accidentally knock it over on the table, you can avoid the heart-stopping moment of panic you may experience with a glass pipe.

Unique Designs

Because ceramic is so easy to make (it is just clay, after all), you can get incredibly unique designs at super affordable prices.

Our collection of ceramic pipes comes with attached coffee mugs or in the shape of a unicorn, a pineapple, flower vases, a straw, a cereal bowl, a vintage bus… you see where we’re going with this.

It’s effortless to choose a ceramic pipe for your smoking pleasure that also suits your individual personality traits and quirks. Proudly display your pipe as a centerpiece on your living room table or kitchen counters. Or, keep it as understated bookshelf decor. The point is: no more hiding an old, ugly pipe in the closet.

Easy to Clean

Ceramic pipe cleaning is so easy, and there are a few methods you can use. One is to get a professional cleaner and follow the instructions that come with it (usually something like soaking the pipe in a mixture of the cleaner/water then rinsing it after).

You can also put a pinch of salt and some rubbing alcohol into the pipe, plug the holes, and shake it. This should dislodge any resin that’s stuck inside from smoking your ceramic pipe. Repeat that enough times until it’s clean, rinse it with warm water, and let it air dry.

To clean resin from the bowl, just rub it with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol. Then follow the same rinse-and-air-dry procedure from the rest of the pipe. Easy peasy.

The Cons

Doesn’t Travel Well

If you like to smoke on the go, ceramic pipes aren’t going to be the best bet for you. While their unique designs are a huge plus, it also makes them a bit more difficult to fit into a purse, let alone your pocket. Smoking a ceramic pipe looks super cool, but it’s better to do it at home.

Plus, while we already established they’re more durable than glass, they can still break. So if you’ve got it in your purse or bag and drop it, you may regret going ceramic. If you choose a super-small pipe and keep it very well cushioned, you might be okay, but we don’t recommend it.

Not as Versatile as Glass

One of the biggest benefits of glass pipes is the wide variety of accessories that come with them. Options to enhance performance like percolation and diffusion accessories aren’t generally compatible with ceramic pipes.

This is another instance where smoking a ceramic pipe looks rad thanks to the zany designs. However, those same designs once again prevent the versatility that comes with glass. So while you’ll still get a smooth smoke sesh with ceramic, you can’t really change up how you do so with accessories.

Burns Hot

Ceramic naturally absorbs heat, which means your pipe may get super hot while you’re using it. This is especially true if you haven’t properly completed your ceramic pipe cleaning habit as you should.

If you tend to hold your flame on your pipe for long periods of time, you run the risk of overheating the ceramic. That means you could burn your hands while you hold it. It may be unlikely, but it’s a possibility you should consider if you’re thinking of smoking a ceramic pipe.

Rapid heating and cooling of the pipe can also lead to cracks. Try to err on the side of evenly applied heat and keeping the bowl at as constant of a temperature as possible.
