What Is A Carb Cap?
A carb cap is a small, heat-resistant dab tool used in dabbing to regulate airflow and control the vaporization of concentrates. Typically made from materials like glass, quartz, silicon, or titanium, a carb cap is placed over the banger or dab nail after applying the concentrate, creating a chamber with heat retention. You don’t use carb caps for bongs, hand pipes, or joints; you only use carb caps for dab rigs.
When to Use a Carb Cap?
You’ll want to use a carb cap whenever you’re doing low-temperature dabs. High-temperature dabs might vaporize quickly, but they’re just not ideal. The wax or concentrate tends to scorch, you lose out on terpenes, and the hit doesn’t taste nearly as good. Dabbing at lower temperatures (typically between 350°F and 500°F) helps preserve the cannabinoid compounds in your concentrates, leading to a more flavorful and effective hit.
However, low-temperature dabs also mean that your concentrate may not fully vaporize without some assistance. This is where a carb cap comes in. Since the carb cap traps heat, you can run your nail or banger at a lower temperature, preserving the good stuff and creating a better session.
What Does A Carb Cap Do?
Carb caps don’t just trap heat. If that was all they did, you could use a lot of different types of substitutes for a carb cap! They also regulate airflow. By restricting air intake, a carb cap creates a more controlled vaporization process, preventing excess airflow from cooling down the banger too quickly.
A carb cap for dab rigs also ensures that the dab vaporizes evenly. This reduces waste and lets you make the most out of your concentrate. Depending on the design, some carb caps also allow for directional airflow, which helps spread the concentrate around the banger to ensure even vaporization.
What To Do If You Don't Have a Carb Cap?
You can still hit a dab without a carb cap, but the experience won’t be as efficient or enjoyable. If you’re dabbing at higher temperatures, your concentrate will vaporize quickly enough that a carb cap isn’t as necessary. However, this often results in a harsher, less flavorful hit that leads to more coughing.
Without a carb cap, you may also find that some of your concentrate remains unvaporized or gets wasted as residue on the banger. This is because the open airflow causes the heat to dissipate too quickly, preventing complete vaporization at lower temperatures.
If you don’t have a carb cap, you can try adjusting your inhalation technique by taking slower draws to maintain some of the heat inside the banger. However, for the best dabbing experience, it’s always a good idea to use a proper carb cap.
What Can I Use Instead of a Carb Cap?
If you don’t have a carb cap, that’s ok for the short term. You can use something round and heatproof, like a spoon, a thick shot glass, or a small jar lid. If your dab came in a silicone container, that works in a pinch. But you should really get a proper carb cap; it works much better and is safer for long-term use!
Do You Need a Carb Cap for Bangers?
Technically, you don’t need a carb cap for a banger, but it significantly improves the efficiency and quality of your dabs. If you want to make sure you’re getting the most out of your concentrate, a carb cap is highly recommended for any type of banger. If you use a thermal banger or a terp slurper, you really do need a carb cap. These designs are specifically meant to work with restricted airflow for optimal vaporization, and you can’t get that without a carb cap.
