What Is a Glass Chillum?
Sometimes compared to a one-hitter, a glass chillum pipe is a smoking tool used for single hits of flower or bud. While one-hitters are usually straight like a cigarette or joint, traditional chillums are usually cone-shaped, with a mouthpiece at the narrow end and a small bowl at the wider end to hold your flower.
What Is a Glass Chillum Used For?
Glass chillums are used for inhaling smoke from dry herb or other plant matter, similar to a joint or cigarette. However, they're also reusable, like a pipe or bong. Because they're small enough to be portable, many people use them when visiting friends.
Some also prefer chillums for a solo smoking session, because they don't have to use as much flower as a pipe or bong. They're an easy and compact way to smoke alongside other tools such as bongs, pipes, and joint rolling papers.
Though chillums can be used to smoke other substances, such as loose tobacco, they’re most commonly used for cannabis.
How Do You Smoke From a Glass Chillum?
To smoke from a chillum glass pipe, start by making sure your piece is clean. Then simply pack the bowl with your choice of plant matter. Make sure to pack it tightly enough that ash or smoldering flower won’t accidentally be sucked into your mouth when you draw on it. Many prefer to grind the cannabis first to provide the most even smoke and make it easier to pack.
Light the flower gently by holding your flame just above it, without actually touching the flame to the flower. Once it begins to smoke, inhale deeply through the mouthpiece. If you've ever smoked a one-hitter or joint, it may feel similar.
When you’re finished, clean the pipe using a pipe cleaner or tissue. For stickier residue, you can soak it in rubbing alcohol and salt in a plastic bag. Once it’s clean and ready for the next use, store it somewhere safe where it won’t be broken or damaged.
Is a Glass Pipe Healthier Than a Joint?
Although all smoking comes with health risks, there may be some benefits to glass over rolled joints. As well as being reusable, glass pipes and chillums don't burn away like the paper in a joint, which means you won't inhale any ash or smoke from the burning paper along with your cannabis.
Glass pipes also typically allow you to burn the cannabis at cooler temperatures, providing a smoother, less harsh smoke. The healthiest pipe to smoke with is generally believed to be the water bong, because the water cools and smooths the smoke, making it a little easier on your lungs.
