Good Mourning: A Playlist
Ah, morning. That wondrous and ethereal time when Helios blazes his chariot towing the immensity of the sun itself across the horizon, beckoning us all to rise with strength and confidence; to grab the fine thread of life from The Fates themselves and tie ourselves glorious knots of fortune and victory. I don’t know about you, but I wake up at 5am, run 10 miles rain or shine, and eat a fresh and healthy cruelty-free breakfast before heading off to volunteer with the elderly for an hour before I go to work.
This, of course, is an outright lie. I crawl out of bed fifteen minutes before I need to leave, feed and let my dog out, make myself look presentable and scramble towards work, every nerve in my body screaming for coffee. For years and years good music was the cornerstone of my morning commute. I grew to dislike the lack of control and variety on the radio and started listening to my ipod on the drive in instead, and in the process would occasionally compile playlists specifically for the morning. I’m not some fly-by-night chucklehead that is gonna make you a playlist with six songs by the same artist and an ironic 80’s movie theme song. I’m a seasoned professional.
During football season last year I inadvertently became a 60 year old and started listening to sports radio to stay up to date for my fantasy football teams (“Clinton-Dix Out for Harambe”, finished 2nd and 3rd respectively). I grew to like it and still listen to it most mornings, however occasionally I’ll put something together to help the world make sense as I register conciousness once more. These songs are for that purpose: a nice mixture of classic and current, energetic and mellow, all meant to help you seize the day or whatever the hell nonsense I typed at the beginning of this.
