History of Storz & Bickel

Today we are going back in time to give you the story of how one of the most powerful names in the vaping industry got started. If you are a fan of the legendary Volcano vaping system, or have used the Crafty and Mighty handheld vapes, then you know exactly who we are talking about — the German powerhouse, Storz & Bickel.

The history of Storz & Bickel begins all the way back in 1996. It was during this year that graphic designer, Markus Storz, began development on herbal vaporizers. Over the next four years he conducted extensive research, patented designs, and then released his revolutionary vaporizer, the Volcano, in 2000.

It is fitting that Storz chose the first year of the new millenium to introduce the world to the Volcano. Humankind was stepping into the future, and the Volcano’s sleek design and innovative technology was a symbol of the age. This machine and its detachable balloon revolutionized the vaporizer industry and quickly pushed Storz into the spotlight.

As demand grew, so did the size of the company, and in 2002 Jürgen Bickel came aboard as a business partner — the Storz & Bickel GmbH & Co. KG was officially in action (we’ll just call them Storz & Bickel from here on).

In 2003 the company entered a new phase: targeting American markets. They executed this through the release of the 110V Volcano, and by 2005 they had built up a strong enough presence in the United States to justify opening a branch of operations in Oakland, California.

Another milestone was achieved in 2007, when Storz & Bickel released their first digitally-controlled vaporizer, aptly named the Volcano Digit.

One year later, in 2008, the company surged ahead in innovation with the release of the Plenty vaporizer — the first vaporizer to combine air and radiation heat into its design. By allowing a powerful amount of blend to be heated at once, the Plenty vaporizer is still one of the strongest handheld vapes on the market today.

To prove their dedication to safety and quality, Storz & Bickel were certified as official manufacturers of medical vaporizers. They achieved this feat in 2009 and have since released the world’s first certified medical herbal vaporizer, the Volcano Medic. Unfortunately, the Volcano Medic is not yet available in the United States.

Having mastered the realm of desktop vaporizers, the company shifted focus in 2014, releasing the Crafty and Mighty handheld vapes. These two machines are a testament to German engineering and since their release, both the Crafty and Mighty have maintained their positions as the most powerful battery-operated herbal vaporizers on the market.

In 2016, Storz & Bickel again raised the standard for the vaporizer industry, building the first medical herbal vaporizer factory in the world! The factory stands in the German city of Tuttlingen and is a testament to the forward-thinking mindset of the company’s founders.
