 A Beginner's Guide to Spubblers

If you’ve never heard of a “spubbler”, don’t worry. These devices are relatively new and only a few online headshops have recently started carrying them. Spubblers (a combination of spoon and bubbler), or chubblers (a combination of chillum and bubbler), are small handheld pipes offering both the portability of a dry pipe and smooth hits of a water pipe. These hybrid devices are quickly growing in popularity, and you may start seeing them around more frequently. If you enjoy smoking trends or just like to experiment with new devices, you’ve got to give spubblers a try. Learn more about the basics of spubblers below.

How a Spubbler Works

A spubbler looks like a spoon pipe, with a bowl at one end and a mouthpiece on the other, but with an added water chamber in the middle. The user fills the water chamber through the mouthpiece, but the design of the spubbler prevents the water from spilling back out when in use as long as the chamber hasn’t been overfilled. After the water chamber is filled, the user loads the bowl, lights the product, and inhales with the same draw technique used for regular water pipes. As the smoke passes through the water, it cools and filters to produce a smoother hit than one from a typical dry pipe.

How to Clean a Spubbler

Since the design itself is spill-proof, making it ideal for easy and discrete transportation, the best method for cleaning a spubbler is by flushing the chamber with clean water and a cleaning solution. For a quick rinse, just hold the mouthpiece of the pipe under running water until all of the dirty water is flushed out and the chamber is filled with clean water again. Ensure the device hasn’t been overfilled, and you’re good to go. For a deeper clean, users will want to use a cleaning solution after the initial flush of dirty water. Use a tall container with your choice of cleaning solution to submerge the pipe, mouthpiece up, into. Once the pipe has been fully submerged this way, flip it upside down into the container and submerge again. Flip the device a few more times and then let it soak for 10-15 minutes. After it has soaked thoroughly, run hot water through the spubbler’s mouthpiece again to flush the device from all traces of cleaner. Once the outside of the piece has dried, it will be ready for another session. It is recommended that users rinse their devices after every use and deep clean at least once a week depending on frequency of use.

Spubbler Tips and Tricks

Although spubblers are smaller than a typical water pipe, what they lack in size they make up for in hard hits. Expect to use half the amount of product you would normally use for a dry pipe to achieve a similar result. Since these devices are smaller than a classic water pipe, it only requires a slow draw to get the water bubbling. Even if you draw too quickly, the design should prevent splash-back, unless the device is overfilled. Last, most spubblers are fairly durable, but they are still made out of glass. Handle with care to prevent unnecessary, or even devastating, cracks, chips, and breakage.
