Jerome Baker Designs: American Glass Since 1991
Few names in functional glass carry the weight of Jerome Baker Designs. Founded by artist Jason Harris, JBD has been producing hand-blown American borosilicate since 1991, and the brand's work sits in private collections alongside pieces from the most collected names in the medium. Every piece is made to order in the studio — not pulled from an import container — which is why a Jerome Baker piece looks, weighs, and works differently than production glass at a similar price point.
SMOKEA® carries Jerome Baker Designs water pipes, bubblers, and concentrate rigs for collectors who want documented American craftsmanship with a real signature behind it.
The Artist Behind the Name
Jason Harris learned glassblowing in 1991 from Bob Snodgrass, the lampworker widely credited with founding the modern American pipe-making tradition. Harris went on to study at the University of Oregon and Pilchuck Glass School, and apprenticed under European masters including Hans Ittig of Wertheimer Glaskunst in Germany. That combination — Pacific Northwest fuming technique layered over formal European training — is what gives JBD work its particular vocabulary.
The Jerome Baker name itself is a nod to the culture the brand grew out of: "Jerome" for Jerry Garcia, whose tours Harris followed while selling his earliest work. By the late 1990s the studio had grown from a garage operation into one of the largest functional glass manufacturers in the world, and the brand has since collected multiple High Times Cannabis Cup awards for its glass.

What Sets JBD Glass Apart
Jerome Baker pieces are built from thick-walled borosilicate — the same scientific-grade glass used in laboratory equipment — chosen for its resistance to thermal shock and its ability to hold heavy color work without clouding. The studio is best known for silver and gold fuming, a technique that deposits vaporized precious metal into the glass surface so the piece shifts color as it develops a patina with use. No two fumed pieces age identically.
Beyond fuming, JBD work is recognizable for its wraps, reversals, and dichroic accents, along with the sandblasted studio signature that appears on authentic pieces. That mark matters: Jerome Baker is among the most widely counterfeited names in glass, and knock-offs are common on unauthorized marketplaces.

Our Jerome Baker Designs selection spans several categories. Straight tubes and beaker-style water pipes make up the core of the collection and offer the most stable footprint for daily use. Bubblers deliver comparable filtration in a compact, portable form. Concentrate rigs feature smaller-volume chambers designed for use with a quartz banger. Availability rotates as pieces are produced and sold, so the collection reflects live inventory rather than a fixed catalog.
Pairing a piece with the right accessories matters as much as the glass itself. Browse our quartz bangers, downstems, and bowls and slides to complete your setup, or explore more American-made glass from other studios we carry.
Caring for a Jerome Baker Piece
Borosilicate is durable, but fumed glass rewards attention. Rinse with warm — not boiling — water after use, and avoid sharp temperature swings that stress the joint. For deeper cleaning, isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt agitated gently will lift residue without abrading color work. Skip ultrasonic cleaners and harsh bleach-based products, which can dull fumed and dichroic surfaces over time. Store the piece upright and away from edges, and use a padded case if you travel with it.
Is Jerome Baker glass made in the USA?
Yes. Jerome Baker Designs pieces are hand-blown in the brand's own studio using American borosilicate. The brand has produced domestically since its founding in 1991 and operates a working studio and gallery in Las Vegas.
How can I tell if a Jerome Baker piece is authentic?
Authentic pieces carry the studio's sandblasted signature or logo. Weight, wall thickness, and the quality of the color work are also reliable indicators — counterfeits are typically noticeably lighter and thinner. Buying from an established retailer rather than a marketplace listing is the simplest safeguard.
Why does Jerome Baker glass cost more than production glass?
Each piece is individually hand-blown by trained artists rather than mass-produced, and the studio uses heavier borosilicate and labor-intensive techniques like fuming and reversals. You are buying a signed, one-of-a-kind object with a resale market, not a commodity.
